There are many different types of wiki's with many different possibilities for a teacher to consider applying in and teaching and learning context.

Common types of wikis are known as communities. These communities are often catogerised by the genre or focus area such as :

• Material sciences
• Personal and societal
• Culture and the Arts
• Recreational
• Religion
• Business
• Politics, society, military, law, history

As these wikis grow either from community involvement or by individual contribution people begin connecting wiki spaces which eventaully forms new "nodes" of wiki community.

The differenece between the types of wikis occurs as knowledge is built and interests are identified between people who are sometimes geographically seperated.
