A wiki is essentially a website. It can also be described as an online writing space without the need to know anything about HTML.

This website is a space designed for individual use only or in most cases is enabled for collaborative editing. A wiki can have many pages linked from a main index page.

A wiki can enable documents to be written in simple markup language and also has a HTML editing function if required. Templates containing layour attributes can also be applied or included in the construction of a wiki site.

Wikis enable teachers to very quickly author text, images and RSS feeds to a webspace that is generally provided free of charge to the user.

Wikis have been in existence since 1995. To begin with wikis were designed to provide others with a space to build collective knowledge however in the late 2000's many enterprises and business have used this collaborative webspace idea for other purposes.

Educators have readily embraced the concept of wikis due to the ease with which to begin constructing and authoring content to the web. mant teachers use a wiki to disseminate links to material and also as a collaborative space in which to communicate with students.

The difference in types of wikis gives eduactors a great range of choice and provides the opportunity for teachers and students to make choices over which collaborative spaces may suit their specific purpose.
