Blogs & Wiki’s
May 25th, 2008 by alexanderhayes

A couple of years back it was…” excuse you ?”
Now Sydney Institute has its open Wordpress blog happening and Western Institute has kick started its wiki and so on…
It’s good to see capability devleopment having its day and that leaves us to revell in the new offerings of what “21st century” might mean. Hopefully there will be changes in templates between pages and things that resemble what web 2.0 really is about - CR 2.0.

The Sydney Institute blog is very impressive….
What I’m curious to know, is whether you can use ‘wordpress’ to blog, but have a (.net) or other url extension?
The reason I ask is because its nice (and somewhat more credible)to be able to have a concise ’site only name’ URL and not .wikispaces or .blogger (in some cases anyway).
If this is possible - can you give some advice on how to do this? I’ve been told of places like ‘hostgater’ and such…. but is there another way? (minimal cost is OK!)
Definetly.
1. Go to http://www.bluehost.com
2. Purchase a 6 moth account
3. Nominate your domain name
4. Login into the control panel
5. Select ‘Simple Scripts’ and one-click install Wordpress 2.5 at the top end of the install tree ( ie. not in a folder )
6. Hack theme and start adding the good bits……plenty of free WP themes out there.
7. Install some funky plugins
ps. if you’d like some help give me a call - 0427996984
Hi Regan
Yes you can, this blog is actually a Wordpress blog. Alex is the person to talk to about the ins and outs as he is the one who set it up.
Have a look, though, at the article “How do I take ‘wordpress’ out of my url?” - http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/02/07/how-do-i-take-wordpress-out-of-my-url/
Thanks guys! Much appreciated…. will give you a call if we get stuck!
Any particularly funky plugins you’d recommend? lol
